Women postpone having a child for various reasons such as education, career or even the inability to find a proper partner. According to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority for births in Greece, the average age of women who had their first child in 2019 was about 32 years, much higher than in 1979 when they were 22 years old.

Another aggravating factor according to the Ministry of Interior is that although the number of births has been on a steadily declining trend for several years, the decline has intensified nine months after the lockdown and under the pressure of the pandemic.
